This post serves as a reminder to faculty and departmental staff that NIH separates consortium F&A costs from direct costs when determining whether a budget exceeds a direct cost limit.
In 2015 NIH instituted a “Total Direct Costs Less Consortium F&A” table to the assembled application PDF for all NIH applications that use the R&R budget form and include sub award budgets. This table displays the NIH-calculated direct costs for each budget year and is used by NIH to determine whether the application falls within the limit.
For single project applications, this table is located after the last subaward budget. It is located after the Composite Application Budget Summary in multi-project applications.
Please note that those applications at or above the prescribed direct cost limit may face higher scrutiny or be returned.
